The main two political parties of the Maldives, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), have won seats in Ga. Villingili and Lh. Neykurendhoo's Women's Development Committees.
In the by-election held Saturday, main-ruling MDP won the Kurendhoo seat while PPM won the Villingili seat. Kurendhoo is a largely PPM-supporting island. The by-election was held on the island following the resignation of a PPM member of the committee.
The MDP candidate won the Kurendhoo seat with a difference of around 100 votes against her PPM contender.
