MACL opens VIA's expanded west apron

Maldives' main international airport, Velana International Airport (VIA), Thursday opened its expanded west apron on Thursday.

The new 'Apron B3''s opening was marked with the arrival of Maldivian Airbus 320 arriving from India. The aircraft received a water salute as it approached the west apron.

According to MACL, the expanded west apron has nine aircraft stands that can accommodate both domestic and international flights. Trials done in October demonstrated the maneuverability of aircraft and ground handling equipment to comply with ICAO safety requirements, MACL said.

MACL now offers services from its north, east and west aprons. The airport company said MACL's services would become smoother and faster with the opening of the new apron.
