Opposition shares concerns on ex-pres' detention with Commonwealth group

The opposition has shared concerns with the Common Wealth Parliamentary Association UK regarding former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom's detention.

The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s leader and former President, Yameen, was jailed in 2018 for five years on a money laundering conviction. He is currently serving his sentence from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The opposition believes Yameen was framed and that he is being detained unlawfully.

The opposition met with the Commonwealth delegation currently visiting the Maldives at the Parliament, following their meeting with the 'UK-Maldives Friendship Group.' The opposition is represented in the group by Maavashu MP and former Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, and Maduvvary MP and former Defense Minister Adam Shareef.

Following the meeting with the delegation, MP Saeed said the opposition shared their concern on what they believe to be the unlawful detention of President Yameen for over 700 days and the government's meddling into the judiciary. He further said President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration must end the torture and respect separation of power.

During his administration, President Yameen withdrew the Maldives from the Commonwealth, accusing it of interfering in domestic affairs.
