Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, will be returning to the Maldives this evening.
Nasheed traveled to Scotland on October 29 to attend the COP26 summit. Following the summit, he traveled to the United Kingdom and remained there for the past few weeks.
According to an official from the Parliament Secretariate, Nasheed is expected to return on Sunday evening, and arrangements are being made in anticipation of his return. While his security has been given the highest priority since the May 6 attack targeted to assassinate him, he will be moved to an official residence being arranged at Muraidhooge. As per the official, the building is now ready for occupancy, and Nasheed will be staying at the official residence upon his return.
Since Nasheed returned to the Maldives on October 11 after receiving treatment abroad for injuries sustained in the May 6 attack, he was housed at Hotel Jen with beefed-up security as the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) could not provide an adequate level of security at his personal residence. His stay at Hotel Jen cost MVR 33,000 per day, a figure that caused the public to criticize the government for sponsoring the stay.
