Former President Mohamed Nasheed has announced that he is temporarily stepping away from politics. His announcement comes amid notable political challenges for Nasheed and a marked decline in his popularity.
In a statement released Tuesday, Nasheed conveyed appreciation to both his allies and critics, revealing his plan to step back from the political arena for an extended period. Confirming that he will not contest the upcoming parliamentary elections, Nasheed thanked the people of Machhangolhi Central constituency whom he is currently representing in parliament.
Nasheed said his political career focused on establishing a multi-party system of government for the Maldives, in addition to working to ensure Maldives was a country where Islamic principles are upheld, human rights are respected and freedom of speech is guaranteed to the people. The statement also said that Nasheed believes Notable progress has been achieved in the Maldives in these areas/
Despite enduring personal hardships, including imprisonment and a near-death encounter, Nasheed expressed contentment with the positive outcomes of his political journey.
"I have suffered torture, sadness, and loneliness throughout the course of my political career. I have endured prison torture and multiple imprisonments. I had to spend a long time away from my family and my entire personal life has been ruined. I have been on the brink of death in a bombing. However, this endeavor has also brought me much happiness and pleasure. Every trap that was set for me turned into a garland. I am extremely grateful to God and submit to Him for these experiences." he wrote.
Nasheed said he had served the people of the Maldives "as much as he could" while serving as President and Speaker of Parliament. During his time as the Maldives President, he focused on establishing a system to provide social security to the people and establishing a tax system in the Maldives, he said.
"the Maldives has a very fragile environment. I am pleased that the Parliament has passed laws to protect our environment. However, it is disheartening to witness the destruction of reefs and the environment in the name of development. My hope is that these issues will see improvement. I believe our future is promising with the growing awareness among the youth,"
Nasheed concluded his statement by stating that he has received an invitation from the chair of the Climate Vulnerable Forum to assume the position of the organization's Secretary General, as the forum has now become an intergovernmental organization. He has accepted the offer, he said.
"I believe that I will be able to serve the Maldives while serving this organization. I would like to announce that I will start working for this organization from January next year," Nasheed said.
