The population of Maldives capital, Male' City, has crossed 252,000, official statistics show.
According to the Male' City's Land Use Plan 2021 publicized by the Male' City Council, the city's population is 252,768 at this time. 76,556 people are registered in the city, while 176,212 people reside in the city for different purposes.
As per statistics, Male' City has 46,251 households.
The biggest challenge faced by the congested city is housing issues. The Land Use Plan said out of the 46,251 households in Male', 29,178 households meet the criteria to be classified as a fit household. This means the households are over 600 square feet in size. 17,073 households do not meet this requirement, being less than 600 square feet in size.
Thirty percent of individuals registered in Male' city reside in homes that do not fulfill the household criteria. This amounts to 5,122 families. Seventy percent of migrants from islands and expatriates occupy the remaining homes under the criteria. This amounts to 11,951 families.
