The Elections Commission has said it is making arrangements to hold the by-election for Komandhoo Constituency following the death of MP Hussain Waheed.
The Komandoo MP passed away early Tuesday at ADK Hospital in capital Male', losing his battle to cancer. He was buried after Dhuhr prayers on Tuesday afternoon.
The Elections Commission said as the Komandoo seat has now become vacant, the commission will announce arrangements regarding the by-election within the next five days. The commission is currently collecting the necessary information, they said.
The law states that a by-election must be held 60 days from the day a seat becomes vacant. The President of the Elections Commission, Fuwad Thawfeek, said the arrangements would be made within the given timeframe. An official meeting will be held on Wednesday to discuss the matter further, he added.
