The Election Commission (EC) has requested more time to organize a referendum on changing the current government system in the Maldives. The EC made this request to the Parliament in a letter signed by its President, Fuwad Thaufeek.
Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb proposed a resolution to hold a referendum on changing the government system, which the Parliament approved to conduct before October 30.
In the letter heard in Parliament today, the commission said it requires additional time to complete various tasks related to the referendum, including raising voter awareness, compiling a voter registry, making arrangements for handling vote-related complaints, and other preparations. The letter mentioned that the earliest possible date for the vote would be communicated later.
"After considering the amount of time necessary for these tasks, the earliest possible date for the vote will be relayed later," the EC said in a letter.
The EC has also requested the exact wording of the question to be included in the ballot paper and an information sheet on arguments for and against the resolution points. The commission also asked to expedite the approval of the budget for the referendum.
