VIA's road, lagoon to be closed for Bangladeshi PM's arrival

The road and lagoon of Velena International Airport will be closed in preparation for Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's state visit to the Maldives.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) said the roads and lagoon of Hulhule island, beginning from the northern corner of the International terminal to the southern corner of the cargo building, will be closed on December 22 for a short period.

MACL said the lagoon would be closed for all vessel movements and mooring from 12:00 pm to 04:00 pm. The road will be closed to all vehicles between 02:00 pm and 04:00 pm. Pedestrians will be allowed to walk as guided by the police during road closures. However, all movement, including walking pedestrians and traffic, will be halted for a brief period during these hours.

MACL said their staff ferry would operate from the jetties in front of the international terminal. The staff bus and MTCC buses will stop at the western parking area.

Sheikh Hasina will be visiting the Maldives on a state visit on December 22 at the invitation of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. She will undertake official duties from December 22 to 23. During her visit, she will be meeting with President Solih for official discussions. The President's Office said several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) would be signed between Maldives and Bangladesh.

Fisheries, human resources, and education are among the key areas the two countries enjoy close cooperation in. The numerous high-level exchanges between the two countries would deepen existing ties and further strengthen bilateral relations.
