Maldives welcomes this year's 1.3 millionth tourist

The Maldives welcomed its 1.3 millionth tourist for the year on Monday.

A ceremony was held at Velana International Airport to welcome the 1.3 millionth visitor, Constantin Stelian Emil from Romania, who arrived in the Maldives via GullivAir. He was welcomed by Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom and officials from the government and MACL. Mr. Emil was conferred special gifts on behalf of MMPRC, the Ministry of Tourism, and other stakeholders.

This is Mr. Emil’s second visit to the Maldives. He previously visited the Maldives five years ago for his honeymoon. He is accompanied by his spouse and two children on his current visit.

The Tourism Ministry first targeted to host 1.5 million tourists this year. However, the number was later revised to 1.3 million, based on the findings of an assessment of the current circumstances by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

As per official statistics, 1,271,020 tourists visited the Maldives by December 23. While this number is still 22.8 percent below pre-pandemic numbers from 2019, it is a 143.4 percent increase compared to 2020.

On average, 3,570 tourists visit the Maldives in a single day. They spend an average of 8.7 days in the Maldives.
