Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) will begin using the new VIP terminal established at Velana International Airport next month.
Speaking to AVAS, MACL's media official said the company hoped to begin using the new VIP terminal next month and that a circular had been sent to MACL's corporate customers regarding changing the services of the current VIP terminal to the new terminal. Although the circular stated a date on which the services will be available in the new terminal, it said the date is subject to change.
The new VIP building in VIA is located behind the current VIP building. The terminal was designed by UG Yamazaki Architecture and constructed by China's BUCG company,
The new four-story building has private cabins and check-in counters for tourists that prefer privacy to common areas.
The airport development project is estimated to cost over USD on billion. A 3,400-meter long runway, costing USD 373 million, has been constructed under the project. The construction of a new passenger terminal has been contracted to Saudi Arabia's Bin Laden Company. Additionally, the development of a cargo terminal and oil storage system has almost reached completion.
A new seaplane terminal has also been developed at VIA. Although almost two years have passed since the seaplane terminal's completion, it has not been put to use thus far.
