Cabinet deliberates response to rising COVID-19 infections

The Cabinet on Tuesday deliberated on its response to rising Covid-19 infections in the country. The Cabinet meeting was held this afternoon at the President’s Office.

At the meeting, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih discussed with his Cabinet ministers measures to reinforce combatting the spread of the coronavirus, increase testing capacity, and ease vaccination procedures ahead of launching a vaccine booster drive.

Due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases following the detection of the Omicron variant in the Maldives, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has taken a number of steps to minimize its spread. HPA has banned gatherings with over 50 people and suspended night markets in this regard. The agency has also decided that spectators will no longer be allowed at sporting events and mandated PCR negative tests for domestic travel for vaccinated individuals. Those who are unvaccinated will need to complete a 14-day quarantine.

The Maldives has recorded over 99,000 positive cases to date. 593 new cases were recorded over the past 24 hours.
