Australia to open High Commission in the Maldives

The government of Australia will be establishing a High Commission in the Maldives.

The decision was announced by Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne. The minister said a High Commission would be opened in Male' to strengthen engagement with an important Indian Ocean neighbor. She said that a permanent Australian diplomatic presence in the Maldives would build on the shared aspirations of Australia and Maldives for a stable, secure, and resilient Indo-Pacific.

Maldives' Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid welcomed the decision and said the move would further strengthen the bilateral relations between both countries.

The Australian High Commissioner to the Maldives is a non-resident High Commissioner based a the Australian High Commission in Sri Lanka.
