The main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Saturday opened applications for those interested in contesting for the party's Chairperson post and two other positions.
In a press conference held on Saturday, MDP's Election Committee's Chair, Mohamed Ibrahim Manik, said those who wish to contest for Chairperson, the Youth Wing, and the Women's Wing can now submit their candidacy papers. The deadline for application is 4:00 pm on February 19. The names of the candidates will be announced on February 22.
Manik said complaints can be submitted when the candidates are announced. A special committee will be established for the purpose, he said.
On February 18, MDP will be holding their PAriamentary gRoup election. Manik said the preparations for the election are ongoing smoothly.
In MDP's National Council meeting held Thursday night, the council decided that the Chairperson Election, Youth Wing election, and the Women's Wing election would be held on April 16.
Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail and Managing Director of State Trading Organization (STO) Hussain Amr have expressed interest in running for Chairpersonship.
As per the Party's Charter, the Chairperson seat must be filled within 60 days from the date it becomes vacant. Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef filled the post for the past five years. This is the first time a Chairperson has remained in the position for a full term.
