Main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Parliamentary Group Leader and Hithadhoo North MP Mohamed Aslam has backed Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail for the party's Chairperson position.
Aslam announced his endorsement for Fayyaz on Thursday via a tweet. In his tweet, Aslam said he believes Fayyaz would lead MDP to greater success and strength. He further said Fayyaz had proven to be a strong leader with exceptional political acumen, unwavering resolve, and commitment to his values.
While Fayyaz has the backing of many MDP parliamentarians, high-ranking government officials and a large percentage of the public have expressed their support for Fayyaz.
MDP will hold its Chairperson election on April 16. In addition to Fayyaz, Henveiru West MP Imthiyaz Fahmy will be contesting in the election. While Fayyaz is a close aide of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Imthiyaz is believed to be backed by Parliament Speaker and former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed.
