The main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s National Council has passed to delay its Chairperson Election until after the Holy month of Ramadan.
The Chairperson Election was scheduled to be held on April 16, which falls on Ramadan. The Economic Minister, Fayyaz Ismail, who is contesting for the post, requested the party to delay the election until after Ramadan so that the maximum number of party members get the chance to vote in the election.
However, his opponent, Maafannu North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy, opposed the proposal.
The party convened its National Council to decide on the matter on Tuesday night. The meeting became heated, with several members debating on the topic.
Fayyaz's campaign manager, Ibrahim Waheed, proposed to delay the election to May 14. Kinbidhoo MP Mohamed Nashiz seconded the proposal. Out of the 115 members who attended the meeting, 100 members voted to postpone the election while 15 voted against it.
All members who back Fayyaz said they agreed that the election must be delayed. Holding an election in Ramadan would cause difficulties, they said. Following The decision to hold the election, many people expressed concern, and the election must therefore be delayed in their right, they said.
