The final results of the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s internal elections held on Saturday have been announced.
The results showed that Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail (Fayya), who was elected as the party's Chairperson, received 27,406 votes. His opponent, Maafannu North MP Imthiyaz Fahmi (Inthi), received 20,217 votes. Fayyaz's votes accounted for 58 percent of the vote, while Imthiyaz received 42 percent. The final result differs from the provisional results announced earlier, with each candidate receiving approximately 300 more votes than the interim result.
While 48,583 people voted in the election, the number of valid votes was 47,623, and 960 votes were counted as invalid.
MDP has also released the details of the votes received by the two candidates in all constituencies. Fayyaz took the lead in three Male' City constituencies: Hulhumale', Henveiru South, and Maafannu West. Imthiyaz won all the remaining Male' constituencies, albeit with a small margin.
Fayyaz won five out of the seven constituencies in Addu City. Imthiyaz was more popular in two constituencies: Maradhoo and Hithadhoo Central. However, Imthiyaz won two out of the three Fuvahmulah City constituencies, while Fayyaz won one.
Fayyaz won the Kulhudhuffushi City North constituency by a huge margin. He received 408 votes from the constituency, while Imthiyaz received 166 votes. Imthiyaz won the Kulhudhuffushi South constituency with 192 votes, while Fayyaz got 127 votes.
Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam was elected president of MDP's Women's Wing. She received 11,754 votes, which is 60 percent of the vote. Her opponent, MDP Youth Wing Member Safath Ahmed Zahir, received 7,847 votes. This is 40 percent of the vote.
20,768 people voted in the Women's Wing election. The number of valid votes was 19,601, and 1167 votes were counted as invalid.
