Candidates call on members to come out and vote in election

Candidates contesting in the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Chairperson Election have called on all party members to come out and vote in Saturday's election.

Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail and Maafannu North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy are contesting for the party's Chairperson post in Saturday's vote. Voting for the election started at 9:00 am and will continue until 4:00 pm.

Minister Fayyaz has called on all party members to vote with renewed vigor.

"MDP members are the leaders working together and isolating themselves from conflict and hatred to bring peace and development to the Maldives,' said Fayyaz in a tweet.

Imthiyaz said all members should come out and vote to prevent the MDP from being taken in the wrong direction.

"This is a reform movement standing tall with a lot of hard work and sacrifices of many people over many years," he tweeted.

In addition to the MDP Chairman, Presidents will be elected to the party's Women's Wing and Youth Wing.

94,211 members are eligible to vote in the Chairperson election, while 41,027 members can vote in the Women's Wing election. 32,057 members are eligible to vote in the Youth Wing election.
