Parliament Speaker and former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed has called on the opposing Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM)'s members not to join the 'India Out' campaign.
Spearheaded by PPM's leader and former President of the Maldives, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, the campaign calling to send back Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives has gained momentum over the past months. Since Yameen was acquitted from a money laundering conviction, he expanded the campaign to the atolls. He has traveled to several islands over the past weeks.
In a tweet published on Friday afternoon, Nasheed said Yameen's India Out movement did not have the people's support and that the campaign was detrimental to the Maldives.
'I sincerely ask of PPM members not to partake in the campaign for the sake of our country,' Nasheed wrote in his tweet.
Nasheed has always prioritized India and spoken in their defense.
