Two hundred and fifty people from Lh. Kurendhoo have joined the opposing Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM).
The registration forms of the new members were received by the PPM leader and former President of the Maldives, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom in a ceremony held Saturday. Yameen is currently visiting the island to gather support for PPM's candidate for the upcoming Kurendhoo Council President by-election.
The by-election to elect the island Council's President is scheduled to take place on March 26. Former President of Kurendhoo Council Ismail Madeeh is contesting on the PPM ticket, while Ali Naseem is competing on behalf of the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The Kurendhoo President vacancy opened up when Ibrahim Shimau, who last held the post, resigned last February.
After the visit to Kurendhoo, Yameen will be visiting Lh. Naifaru. He will participate in an 'India Out' event on the island.
