The opposition has said over 4,000 people from the atolls will be arriving in the capital city for the 'India Out' event scheduled for Friday.
Spearheaded by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, the opposition's India Out campaign seeks to drive out Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives. The movement has gained momentum in recent months, especially in the atolls. While both the government and Parliament are attempting to stop the campaign, the opposition has said they would not stop the movement at any cost.
In a press conference held Tuesday, the Progressive Coalition said a rally would be conducted in three locations in the capital city: Usfasgandu, Rasfannu, and Carnival area.
Former Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed 'Shaadu' Shahid said Male' City Council had given the green light to carry out the event at the three locations. He said supporters from across the Maldives would attend Friday's event, and assured that the rally would go on despite the government's attempts to obstruct it.
'We have invited [supporters] from Haa Alif to Seenu atoll. We are receiving lists, and vessels are making preparations, flights are being chartered. All citizens will travel to Male' for this rally. This rally will take place; this rally will see [people] fill Male' City,' Shaadu said.
The coalition said the number of supporters who will join the rally would be confirmed on Wednesday. He added that all supporters are traveling to the Maldives at their own expense, not party funds.
