PNC dismisses council member linked to drug case

People's National Congress (PNC) has dismissed its Council Member Ahmed Hussain following his arrest over 42 kilograms of drugs seized by the police.

On Thursday, the police conducted a search operation during which 42 kilograms of heroin were discovered buried under false flooring in a home in Maafannu ward, Male' City.

A statement issued by PNC on Saturday said the party was aware that Ahmed Hussain was arrested on drug charges in relation to the case. The party said the suspect was dismissed from his position as a council member and suspended from all party activities as per party charters. The party said the decision was made after considering the steps taken in similar situations in the past.

According to PNC's charter, the party leadership has the authority to take action against party members who violate the law and the party's policies.

In October 2020, another PNC council member, Shaheeb Ibrahim, was dismissed from the post and suspended from the party in relation to a drug case. He was arrested last year for being the main suspect in a case that involved over 130 kilograms of drugs.
