Maafannu South MP Imthiyaz Fahmy has said the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is seeing defeat in local elections due to negligence towards the people. Imthiyaz made the statement while debating a motion filed at the Parliament regarding subpar services at L. Gan Hospital.
Imthiyaz said minor treatments are not available at some health centers and hospitals and that the matter must be rectified at the earliest. While MDP's current term is nearing its end, he said facing the people for re-election without addressing and resolving such issues would not sit well with the public.
The MP went on to criticize the government for not showing enthusiasm in investigating corruption involving ventilators purchased at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed concern that the state lost significant amounts to corruption.
'I think the losses we faced in recent elections are linked to these things. We lost one of our seats in the Kurendhoo constituency. Simply making a pledge is no longer enough for the people. We have to do it. We have to do it and show them,' he said.
Imthiyaz further said MDP faced defeat in the local council election for Male' City Council seats due to failure to fulfill the people's needs. He said while housing issues are the most pressing issues people face in both the capital Male' City and the atolls, there is no hope of resolving the issue.
'For this reason, we have to be more attentive and attend to these issues, and we have to start the work and show it. I don't believe we can get votes otherwise,' he said.
