Parliament Speaker requests to expedite committee work

Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed has requested the Parliament to expedite the bills that are currently in the committee stage.

Beginning Tuesday's Parliament sitting, Speaker Nasheed said MPs must aim to reduce the time spent on bills in the committee stage. He said the Parliament Secretariat would work towards that.

According to Nasheed, 25 bills are currently at the committee stage. He said it would be beneficial for MPs to come up with a way to conclude work on the bills at the earliest instead of dragging it on at the committee stage. He further said the administrative work regarding a bill must be left to administrative staff, and the MPs must concern themselves with understanding and discussing the bill in order to reach a conclusion.

This is not the first time Nasheed has expressed concern over delays in bills at the committee stage.
