Over 5,000 members registered to other parties: PPM

The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has claimed that over 5,000 of the party's registered members were registered to other political parties over the past five months.

The party's Secretary-General Mohamed Tholal Friday said over 5,000 PPM members were transferred to other political parties without their knowledge since October last year. He requested the Elections Commission to look into the matter and asked the commission to take action against parties who 'steal' members. He also asked the commission to re-register the members to their original parties.

The Elections Commission is working to address and resolve the issue of individuals being registered to political parties without their knowledge. In this regard, details of party members will be publicized from August 1. Listed individuals will be granted seven days to file complaints.

The President of the Elections Commission, Fuwad Thawfeek, said the commission frequently receives complaints from people who were registered to political parties without their knowledge. He said the commission believes the best practice would be to publish details of party members on the commission's website.
