Voting has commenced for the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Chairperson Election.
In addition to the MDP Chairman, Presidents will be elected to the party's Women's Wing and Youth Wing. The party said that although voting commenced at 9:00 am on Saturday, polling started later at most polling stations.
More than 94,000 people are eligible to vote in today's election. A total of 272 ballot boxes have been placed across the Maldives.
MDP's Chairperson race is the most contested internal election this year. Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail and Maafannu North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy are contesting for the post.
