The newly-elected Chairperson of the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Fayyaz Ismail, has said the vote given by the MDP members in the party's internal elections on Saturday was a vote given towards winning the 2023 Presidential Election and running MDP as its members wished.
Fayyaz won the Chairperson Election after defeating Maafannu North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy by a huge margin. Fayyaz received over 28,000 votes, which gives a difference of about 8,000 votes compared to the 20,000 votes that his opponent received.
Speaking to reporters after his victory was confirmed, Fayyaz said the votes he received show that party members are with the government and wish to re-elect the party for a second term in the 2023 Presidential Election.
"This victory shows that the MDP members are satisfied with the government. They want to strengthen the government, and they want [MDP] to win the 2023 [presidential] election," Fayyaz said.
Fayyaz said there was no place to complain about the election results, adding that the results showed a more significant difference than could be argued. The results affirm that party members are with the government, he said.
Fayyaz thanked all the party members who voted in Saturday's election.
