No interest in becoming running mate: Fayyaz

Chairperson of the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Economic Minister, Fayyaz Ismail, has said he has no interest in becoming President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's running mate in the upcoming presidential election.

A local newspaper recently reported that Fayyaz was among several political figures who have expressed interest in being President Solih's running mate.

In response to these claims, Fayyaz took to Twitter and said for reasons unknown to him, it was former MDP Chairperson Moosa Manik who has been stating that Fayyaz had an interest in being President Solih's running mate. Tagging Moosa Manik in the tweet, Fayyaz expressed disappointment in the spread of misinformation.

Speaking to reporters following the conclusion of his campaign tour to Meemu and Vaavu atoll on Monday, President Solih acknowledged that various names were being considered for the role of running mate. He stated that he is currently in discussions with party leaders regarding this matter and that it's a difficult decision to make.

According to media reports, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and incumbent Vice President Faisal Naseem are believed to be among the potential candidates for the running mate position.
