Customs destroy over 13,000 bottles of alcohol

The Maldives Customs Service has destroyed a large amount of liquor and tonic bottles. The items were destroyed Sunday at the Thilafushi landfill under the supervision of the relevant authorities.

The destroyed items were subject to the customs procedure for the destruction of expired or deteriorated goods in bonded warehouses.

List of destroyed items

50 bottles of liquor
Alcoholic Beer - 13,471 bottles
Alcoholic beer - 137 cans
Tonic - 7,424 bottles

The Custom General Regulation states that items detained by Customs for various reasons may be destroyed under prescribed procedures.

Being an Islamic nation, alcohol is effectively banned for the local population. While most resorts and safaris are licensed to serve alcohol, it is prohibited for unlicensed parties to bring in alcohol to the country.
