Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced Thaa Hirilandhoo's Land Reclamation and Shore Protection project.
The project was inaugurated at a ceremony held at Hirilandhoo on Thursday by Hirilandhoo MP Mohamed Nashiz and MTCC's CEO Adam Azim.
The current land area of ​​Hirilandhoo is 29 hectares. The project will add 25 hectares of land to the island and increase the island's size to 54 hectares.
Land Reclamation and Shore Protection of Hirilandhoo was contracted to MTCC by the Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure on November 10th, 2020, for MVR 105 million. The project's scope includes dredging and reclamation of 25 hectares, construction of rock boulder revetment of 1,080m, and construction of 80m groyne. The project must be completed within 18 months.
Hirilandhoo, an island known for its fish cooking and fiber industry, has a population of 1,200.
