Ihavandhoo land reclamation project reaches completion

Haa Alif Ihavandhoo land reclamation project, contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), has reached completion.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration initiated the Ihavandhoo land reclamation project in 2021. However, after dredging approximately eight hectares of land, the project was halted due to the relocation of the machines used for the project being temporarily relocated to another island.

The dredging work resumed on the 12th of this month using a specialized dredger named Filippo Brunelleschi, rented from a reputable Belgian company. The new dredger has the capacity to dredge an area equivalent to four days of work by MTCC's own dredger, Maha Jarraf, in just one day, with a capacity to reclaim one hectare of land per day. Making remarkable progress in a short time, the 25-hectare land reclamation project in Ihavandhoo, which has a population of about 4,000, has now reached completion.

The Ihavandhoo land reclamation project was allocated MVR 116 million from the state budget. The project's scope included the reclamation of 25 hectares of land and the construction of an 850-meter rock boulder revetment, which will bolster coastal protection.

MTCC will build a boatyard and a turf football ground on the newly dredged land. Portions of the land will also be allocated to Ihavandhoo residents.
