Amendments to land transport regulations allow foreigners to obtain permanent license

Amendments have been made to land transport regulations that allow some foreigners to obtain permanent licenses.

The new amendments allow foreigners married to Maldivians to receive permanent licenses under Section 6 of the regulation. According to the regulations, permanent licenses are issued to Maldivian citizens and foreigners married to Maldivian citizens upon the expiry of the temporary permit issued to them. The permanent license must be renewed every ten years.

The regulations further state that persons holding driving licenses when the amendment comes into effect can add new license categories without undergoing a practical driving examination. Those who wish to add categories must submit applications and pay a prescribed amount.

The new amendments have come into effect upon being gazetted.
