The number of four-wheelers registered in the Male' area has declined significantly this year compared to the previous year.
The Transport Ministry said on the 'Sarukaaru' website that the government of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has effectively ended the practice of registering land vehicles outside the law and regulations. While the ministry has also strengthened verification processes for mandatory garages attributed to each vehicle in the vehicle registration process, these measures aim to reduce illegal registrations and address the city's growing traffic concerns, it said.
Citing statistics, the ministry said as a result of the changes brought to the registration process, the number of four-wheelers registered in the city decreased by 74.1 percent as of October this year compared to the same period last year. The two-wheeler registration rate also declined by 8.1 percent.
As of March last year, 96,357 bicycles, 6,470 cars, and 6,457 other four-wheelers were registered in Male' area.
