Main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has said MDP is the party that revolutionized the Maldives. Nasheed made the statement in a tweet posted on the occasion of MDP's 17th anniversary.
The MDP was registered on June 26, 2005, as the first political party in the Maldives. In his tweet on the occasion of the party's anniversary, Nasheed said MDP introduced a tax system to increase state revenue and provided social security to the people.
While MDP is celebrating its 17th anniversary, the party's strong unity has been shaken like never before. The party has been divided into two, with some backing Speaker Nasheed and some backing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih while they are at loggerheads over power.
It is not common for MDP members to speak out against President Nasheed in the past. However, in recent months, President Nasheed's powers in the decision-making processes within the party seem to have dwindled significantly.
The MDP has won two presidential elections in its 17 years and won a super majority in the last parliamentary elections.
