Videos a slaughter, will not shake resolve: Nasheed

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has said "slaughtering" reputations by leaking controversial videos will not shake his resolve. Nasheed made the remark in a message sent to the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) 's National Council members' Whatsapp group on Sunday, after videos and photos of people believed to be senior MDP leaders engaged in sexual and homosexual acts were leaked on social media.

The first video showed a man believed to be Nasheed's brother, Nazim Abdul Sattar. While the police are investigating the case, his passport has also been withheld under a court order. Nazim, who is notoriously active on Twitter, has deactivated his account on the platform amid the allegations against him.

In his messages, President Nasheed said the videos were leaked with the involvement of some influential government ministers. Describing it as a "slaughter", he said such moves cannot shake him.

Nasheed further said Nazim's case is not being investigated fairly. He said the government did not act as it did in Nazim's case even though many such things were witnessed in the past, adding that both he and his brother would most likely be jailed.

"I know I will be jailed too. But I will not give up," Nasheed said in one of his messages.

Nasheed has also alleged that the police were involved in releasing the videos. He said he was aware of the police involvement and assistance in taking the videos and photos. He further said that his efforts to reform the police service were unsuccessful, adding that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had failed even more so in reforming the police.
