Application opens for 3,000 plots from Male' Area

The opportunity to apply for 3,000 plots of land in the Greater Male Area opened on Sunday.

Out of the 5,000 plots to be issued from the Greater Male' Area, 3,000 plots will be allocated in the first round. Planning Minister Mohamed Aslam explained the conditions for applying for the land at a meeting held at the President's Office on Sunday.

Only residents of Male' can apply for these plots. Any Male' resident who does not own 600 sqft of land and would not inherit land of the size can apply for these plots.

There are six categories of applicants for land under the 'Gedhoruveriya' scheme. While individuals can also apply for the land, family members can apply for land jointly. Alternatively, entire families can also apply for the plots together. Priority will be given to those who submit for the plots together as a family.

The minimum size of the plots to be allocated is 1250 sqft. The largest plots would be 4,000 sqft, the biggest size that can be issued within the law.

According to Minister Aslam, if seven members of the same family apply for the land together, they will have the opportunity to get the largest land size. These plots will be allocated from Hulhumale' and Gulhifalhu. He said the land recipients would be finalized next year, and the land registries would be issued to them within the year.

"I have no doubt that within the next year, we will be able to identify these 3,000 plots of land and give the land registry to the rightful owners," Aslam said.
