Parliament Speaker and former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed has said President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih seeking re-election is not in the best interest of his party, the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Nasheed made the statement speaking at the Ask Speaker program held on Thursday night.
President Nasheed made the remarks when asked by a member of the public whether he was confident of winning the MDP presidential primary for the 2023 Presidential Election, and if he would support the winning candidate if he did not win the primary.
In his response, Nasheed said he would not contest any election expecting to lose, adding that he would win the election. He then said it is not in MDP's interest for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to run for a second term in office.
