Independent candidate wins Thulusdhoo WDC seat

An independent candidate won a seat on K. Thulusdhoo's Women's Development Committee in the constituency's by-election held Saturday.

Four candidates contested the by-election for a seat on the committee. They are Fathimath Nada from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Saleema Abdul Latheef from the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), Mariyam Nahza from the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and Aishath Rashad as an independent candidate. Aishath Rashad won the election with 300 votes. Nada received 225 votes, while Saleema received 54 votes and Nahza 46 votes.

Aishath Rashad is a former PPM member. She also contested the party's primary for the by-election. However, she lost the primary and posted a video congratulating the primary candidate on the same day.

After deciding to contest the election as a private candidate, Aishath Rashad said K. Atoll Council's President and PNC's Deputy President Mohamed Nimal had forced her to release the video.
