Maldives' main airport, Velana International Airport (VIA), on Thursday recorded its highest number of domestic passengers in one day.
The Maldives Airports Company (MACL), which operates VIA, said domestic air traffic movement reached 125 on Thursday. According to MACL, nearly 3,300 people traveled by air to different parts of the Maldives, a record number of domestic passengers.
National airline Maldivian said out of these, 3,084 passengers traveled via the airline.
The frequency of domestic flights was increased to coincide with the upcoming Eid holidays. This year's Eid holidays coincide with the school holidays, which increased the amount of domestic travel. The demand for flights increased significantly, with some travelers unable to purchase tickets to fly to their destinations.
Domestic flights are operated by Maldivian, FlyMe, and Manta Air.
