Nasheed condemns young girl's brutal murder

Parliament Speaker and former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, has condemned the murder of a young girl in Male' City.

The severely mutilated body of Shiaau Mohamed Saeed, Gn. Fuvahmulah was discovered inside a home in Henveiru ward of Male' City late Saturday night. A 20-year-old local man, Ali Shahil from F. Nilandhoo Finifenmaage, was arrested at the scene.

Nasheed published a tweet on the matter late Sunday amid criticism for not condemning the killing. In his tweet, Nasheed said the brutal murder of a young girl in the city was a shock to all and that he condemned the heinous act. He added that a proper investigation should be conducted, and the perpetrators should be duly punished.

According to the police, Shahil was under the influence of drugs at the time of the arrest. The suspect had no prior criminal record. Although he has not confessed to the murder, the suspect has been remanded in custody pending the outcome of trial.
