President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to developing sports and providing more opportunities for athletes. He made this statement at a meeting with the national table tennis team upon their return after representing the country at the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games 2021. The women’s team won bronze in the team event at the games held in Konya, Türkiye, from August 9-18, 2022.
Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to developing sports and providing more opportunities for athletes, the President stated that the administration would do more to support athletes excelling in different sports areas. At the meeting held to celebrate the achievements of the women’s team, the President expressed his gratitude and congratulated them for their courage and determination.
The President said the athletes’ accomplishments resulted from the hard work and time of many, including their parents. He then shared his thanks for their continued support. He noted previous achievements for the country in the regional arena and expressed his confidence in the athletes and teams to bring home even more outstanding achievements.
Highlighting the administration’s efforts to develop the sporting sector, the President spoke about initiatives to provide more opportunities for talented young athletes outside the Malé region to develop their talent and compete in tournaments. He also noted that accomplishments in international competitions are a source of fame and pride for the nation.
Vice President Faisal Naseem, cabinet ministers, and senior government officials attended the meeting at the President’s Office on Monday afternoon.
