Parliament approves appointment of three ambassadors

The Parliament has approved the appointment of three ambassadors representing the Maldives.

Parliament Thursday approved Ibrahim Shaheeb as the new ambassador to India, Ali Hussain Didi (Alidi) as the new ambassador to Malaysia, and Abdul Gafoor Mohammed as the new and first ambassador to the United States.

Shaheeb has previously served as Permanent Secretary, Additional Secretary, and Chief of Protocol at the Foreign Ministry, as well as Ambassador to Singapore.

Alidi has previously served as the Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldivian Ambassador to the European Union. He also served as the President of the Male' Municipality for many years.

Ghafoor, who was appointed as the Ambassador to the United States, is currently the Ambassador at Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Some opposition members criticized the government over the appointment of several ambassadors. The main concern of the members is the appointment of ambassadors to countries that are not so important to the Maldives during the economically difficult times.
