Speaker voices concern on low attendance at Parliament sessions

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has expressed concern over the low attendance rate at Parliament sittings.

The Parliament consists of 87 members representing different constituencies. When Tuesday's Parliament session kicked off, only 24 members were present at the Parliament hall. Six members were on leave while three were away on official visits.

Starting Tuesday's session, Speaker Nasheed said it is concerning that only 24 members were present out of the 87 elected members.

“In an honorable House of 87 members and where they are receiving their due salaries, having 24 members when the session commences, I think, is a disregard for our legal duty,” he said.

Nasheed has previously voiced concern over low attendance at the start of Parliament sessions. The public has also criticized MPs on social media for the same reason.
