Development can be brought about without harming nature: Nasheed

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has requested the government to find a way to carry out development projects without destroying natural resources.

Nasheed posted a tweet on Monday stating that the ideology that natural resources are destroyed to bring about urban development should be abandoned.

"I am asking you to keep in mind the natural life while carrying out development projects. Think twice before destroying the life of this universe like plants, fish, birds, and insects, and find an alternative," he said.

Nasheed is advocating to protect natural resources while a petition has been filed in the Civil Court on his behalf, seeking an injunction to stop the removal of trees for the development of Ameenee Magu in Male'.

President Nasheed has always spoken out on environmental issues. He also receives international spotlight for his efforts to protect the environment.
