Action to be taken against City Council for operating unregistered business

The Economic Ministry has said action will be taken against Male' City Council for operating an unregistered business.

The City Council opened a plant shop in the Carnival area in Male' City on October 8. Over 25 different varieties of plants and compost are available at the 'Male' Fehi' outlet.

When asked regarding the City Council's shop, the Economic Ministry said the City Council could carry out business activities by registering the business at the Economic Ministry. However, the ministry said that the City Council did not obtain a business permit to operate the plant shop.

The official who spoke from the Economic Ministry said action would be taken against the City Council as per the same policies followed in penalizing members of the public that operates unregistered businesses. However, he did not provide details on the action taken in similar situations.

"We have also received complaints about the City Council opening a shop to sell plants. However, the ministry has not permitted the City Council to operate such a business," the official said.
