Shiaau's murder: Investigation ongoing as motive still not established

Maldives Police Service has said the investigation into the murder of Shiaau Mohamed Saeed, Gn. Fuvahmulah, has not been concluded as the motive of the murder has still not been established.

Shiaau's body was found brutally murdered and heavily mutilated at a home in Henveiru ward of Male' City in August this year. A suspect, identified as Ali Shahil, was arrested at the crime scene. The police mid-October said the investigation into Shiaau's death would be completed within two weeks and sent for prosecution. However, the case has not been forwarded for charging thus far.

Speaking to AVAS on Tuesday, Police Media Unit Chief Fathimath Nashwa said the police are still in the process of extracting information from the suspect's mobile phone. She said the police are investigating the motive behind Shiaau's death and that the objective of the investigation is to establish justice.

Police had previously said there was enough evidence to prove Shahil murdered Shiaau. No other accomplice is believed to be involved in the crime. The police had also earlier noted that they had gained access to Shahil's phone and that there were possible motives for the murder. More than 45 people had been questioned in connection with the death, and additional CCTV footage is being analyzed, police said.

Police in October said the post-mortem showed that Shiaau died from her injuries and that her body was attacked even after her death. While a psychological assessment has been conducted on Shahil, no mental illnesses have been noted, the police said.
