The Male' City Council has said it would divide Male' into 16 zones and Villimale' into four zones to collect garbage in public spaces.
The City Council signed an agreement with WAMCO on December 26, 2016, assigning WAMCO the task of cleaning and maintaining public places, parks, and squares in Male' and Villimale'. While the agreement will expire on December 26 this year, the City Council decided against renewing the contract earlier in September.
The City Council instead decided that the cleaning and maintenance of the streets and public places in the city would be directly undertaken by the council. In this regard, the council plans to use 15 vehicles in Male' and four in Villimale' for the purpose. The council said small vehicles that can access narrow streets would be used.
The council has said there is a lot of garbage on Male' streets, causing inconvenience to pedestrians and vehicles. The council is also receiving complaints about the delay in removing such garbage from the streets.
The City Council assures that it can perform better and generate a better profit than WAMCO by employing 85 additional employees in Male' and 25 in Villimale' on top of the existing 150 employees. The council said all employees would receive an average salary of MVR 10,000 each.
