MDP Primary: Both candidates declare victory

Both candidates in the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s presidential primary have declared themselves the winners of the election.

The highly-anticipated election was contested by MDP's leader and Maldives President, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and MDP's President and Parliament Speaker, Mohamed Nasheed. Voting commenced at 9:00 am on Saturday and closed at 5:00 pm.

President Nasheed's campaign team said in a statement that exit polls show that candidate number one -- President Nasheed -- has won the MDP presidential primary.

"Exit polls show that candidate No. 1 will have a strong majority of 64.7 percent," the statement said.

The exit poll results were first announced by President Nasheed's campaign agent MP Hassan Lateef. The statement was issued by the campaign team later.

Meanwhile, President Solih's campaign team also published a tweet announcing his win. The tweet said President Solih won the MDP presidential ticket with a huge majority of 67 percent.

The final results of the election are yet to be announced.
