Interim results: 61 percent for President Solih, 39 for Nasheed

Provisional results of the MDP presidential primary have been announced.

The provisional results of the MDP primary held Saturday show that the MDP leader and President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih won the primary with 24,572 votes. This is 61 percent of the votes.

Meanwhile, Solih's contender, Parliament Speaker and MDP President, Mohamed Nasheed, received 15,631 votes. This is 39 percent of the total votes.

President Solih won the majority in all cities except Kulhudhuffushi City. Although it was previously expected that NAsheed would win Male' City, President Solih won the capital city with 51 percent of the votes, which accounts for 2,199 votes. Nasheed received 49 percent, with 2,115 votes.

According to the Election Commission, the MDP has 58,175 members. However, 57,255 people were eligible to vote in the MDP primary. According to the MDP primary figures, 40,887 people voted in Saturday's polls.

Following his victory, President Solih celebrated with his supporters and urged all MDP members to put rivalry behind them and unite together to win the September presidential election.

President Nasheed has not yet accepted defeat in the MDP presidential primary.
