Presidential ticket to be handed over to Pres Solih next month

The main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will hand over its presidential ticket to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih next month.

President Solih and Parliament Speaker and MDP Leader, Mohamed Nasheed, battled it out in the party's presidential primary on Saturday to attain the ticket to contest September's presidential election on the party's behalf. President Solih won the primary by a large margin, winning 61 percent of the votes against NAsheed's 39 percent.

An official from MDP said the final results of the party's presidential primary would be announced within five days in accordance with the party's constitution. The party's presidential ticket will be handed over to President Solih next month, he said.

After winning the primary, President Solih called on party members to put aside differences and rivalry and work together to win this year's presidential election. He said it would be easier to win the presidential election than the party's primary.
